Short Note: An African Village

Africa is the second largest continent in the world, consisting of more than thirty seven countries and Nigeria is the biggest country of west Africa. The people of Nigeria are mostly farmers. They live in huts under large Bush Areas. There are no roads or streets in Nigerian villages and the huts are scattered in bush areas.

Now a days a farmer's house may have two or more rooms but in the past it had only one room. The walls of their huts are made with wood and plastered with mud and the roof of hut is made of grass, reeds and palm leaves, the courtyard of house is the center of activities. Women work and cook while children play there. There is no furniture in their house they sleep on mats. There is no electricity in these villages therefore, they use log fires for heating and lighting purposes.

They cultivate food crops as well as cash crops. Food crops include: plantains, potatoes, ground nuts and pepper while cash crops include: oil palm and cocoa. The only cattle they have are goats for milk and poultry for eggs. They plough their fields with their own hands, walk long distances and carry loads on their heads.

The time is changing in Nigeria, as soon as the villages connect with roads the farmers will have cars and buses for travel purpose and soon they may see radios, electricity, schools and hospitals coming in to their villages.
