Matter & its States

Q. What is Matter and how many states of matter?

All the material that is around us is made up of matter, Matter itself is made up of tiny tiny little building blocks called atoms.

Definition:

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.

States of Matter:-
Matter is generally classified in three states:

Solid:

In the first state of matter our atoms, our building blocks are closely packed together and they are rigidly held in place with respect to one another. Due to this arrangement of atoms it has a definite shape and definite volume. This state of matter is referred to as Solid.

Liquid:

In the second state of matter our atoms are still close together but now they got a little more freedom of movement. They are free to slide and move over one another. It does not have any definite shape it takes the shape of its container but it has definite volume. This state of matter is called Liquid.

Gas:

In the third state of matter, our atoms are separated from one another and they are free to move in any and every direction within the space. It does not have any definite shape nor definite volume. This state of matter is called Gas.
